Visual Aid: Asking forgiveness for our sins

Bíblical foundation:
"Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. " (Isaiah 1:16-18)
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. " (1 Juan 1:9)

What we need:
Black paper, white paper, a pair of scissors.

Let's start!
Before class, we prepare for each pupil a triangle shape cut of black paper, and a heart cut of white paper.

We give each pupil a piece of black paper. (The white hearts should not be visible to the pupils.) We explain them that this black paper stands for the dark things in our lives, for evil, for sin. We allow some time for the children to think about what exactly this black paper means for each of them: Maybe you offended one of your friends or fellow students? or you lied to somebody? or you forgot God, did not seek him, did not say "Thank you" to him? etc. - You could also ask the children to write their sin onto the paper with a color pencil.
We assign then a corner of the room where the children can go, one by one, to kneel down as a sign of repentance, ask God's forgiveness, and leave their black paper there on the floor. (If you like, you can put up a cross in that place, as a reminder that Jesus Christ died on the cross in order to forgive our sins.)
After that, we give a white heart to each child. We explain them that Jesus Christ forgives our sins; and when we repent and ask His forgiveness, our lives will be "clean" before him. (We can use one of the verses mentioned above.)

Note: Isaiah 1:16-18 shows that true repentance manifests itself in a change in the way of life. We must make clear that repentance is not something superficial, not a matter of "saying the right words", but a decision to live in a different way.
