Object Lesson: The Great Wonder
Biblical
Foundation:
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my
mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and
wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full
well. " (Psalm 139:13-14)
What we need:
A box of regular size, with its cover
Paper and colors to cover the box
A mirror
Let's start!
As preparation, we cover the box with colored paper and write in
large letters on op of the cover: "THE GREAT WONDER".
Inside the box we put a mirror.
In class, we show the closed box and announce: "Today, I
brought something very special for you. In this box, you will see
a great wonder. Those who want to see it, may come to the front,
but only one by one. And nobody is allowed to speak about what he
has seen, until everybody has seen it."
You should be quite strict about not speaking. - To the children
who come to the front, one by one, you have them look at the open
box so they can see their own face in the mirror (but so that the
other children cannot see what is inside the box). - It can be
quite amusing to observe the surprised looks of the children, and
the expressions of those who are still waiting for their turn,
asking themselves what might be there in the box!
After everybody has seen "the great wonder", we can
talk with the children about the experience. We can ask them
questions like these: How did you feel when seeing your face? -
Has anyone ever told you you are a wonder?
After that, we explain to them that this is not just a joke, but
God really says that everyone of us is his wonderful work. We
explain them the verses from Psalm 139 quoted above. ¡You
yourself are the great wonder of God!
We can use this activity as an introduction to a lesson about the capacities God has given us, about God's love for us, or about accepting ourselves and our neighbors. Many children have a very low concept about themselves and need to be encouraged to recognize their great value for God. There also children who are accustomed to ridicule others because of certain characteristics of their body (very tall or very short, large ears, a different skin color, etc.) We should in no way give them the opportunity to do this during this activity; on the contrary, we should teach them to respect and value one another in the particular way God created everybody.
